Space Ranger

"Spiders. Why did it have to be spiders..."

Any Terran who knows their war-history may have heard something of "Doctor Adam Strange". He worked closely with the S.S.R. (Strategic Scientific Reserve), and earned a reputation for being a "real life Indiana Jones". Short stories were written and published about Strange's adventures into the deep, dark past - most of them romanticized (but not entirely). Scientists know him as the "mind behind Zeta-technology" (not quite true, but that is their perception of him). There are many worlds out there that have heard of the "Saviour of Rann", the "Warrior of Two Worlds", the "Space Ranger", Adam Strange. Among the enemies of Rann, there are a few of them convinced Adam Strange is some terrible, super-powered being that can crush his foes with but a thought - an exaggeration of course.

Abilities

Attribute: Enhanced Physique (3)

Strange's physical conditioning is at the level of an Olympic athlete, due in part to his rigorous training, as well as attempts by Rannian science to cure his reaction to Rann's atmosphere. This treatment has had the permanent effect of boosting Strange's immune system, his overall strength and stamina, and slowed his aging process somewhat.

Lifespan - Unknown. Possibly 2-3x that of a normal human. Strength (3) Dexterity (3) Endurance (3)

Attribute: Intellect (5)

Strange is a genius. Although most of his formal education pertains to Xeno-Archaeology, he has picked up the science behind Zeta-Technology and perfected it - a feat none of the scientists on Rann could achieve.

Equipment: Jetpack (5)

Rannian tech. The pack uses molecular compression to 'fold up' when not in use, and is capable of growing wings for gliding. While the power-suit uses anti-grav technology to simply levitate, the jetpack's engines can reach transonic speeds in an atmosphere. In space, it is much faster but still restricted to sub-light speeds.

Equipment: Power-Suit (5/6)

Strange's power suit is of Rannian design and highly advanced. The suit itself is light, but extremely resilient - sealed against vacuum, with its own life-support, and insulated against extremes in temperature. It employs hard-light technology to resist most forms of damage, and anti-grav tech to levitate. Its hard-light visor serves as a holographic HUD.

Toughness - (5) normally, (6) with hard-light reinforcement. Oxygen - 24hrs.

Equipment: Weaponry (0-6)

Strange has a variety of different weaponry at his disposal, ranging from simple melee implements to rayguns and the like. His vambraces are capable of generating a few different 'hard-light' constructs, thus removing the need to actually carry an arsenal on him all the time. Each construct requires power to remain cohesive - relative to how much damage the construct does. 'Max-Damage' blasters will last for 2-3 shots before requiring a recharge.

'Holo' Guns (Damage 3-6) - Holographic (A.K.A. 'Hard-Light'), wrist-mounted energy constructs. Generally, the emitters manifest wrist-mounted laser-cannons on either of Adam's arms (Damage Rating 4, or so), but can be charged for greater damage (5-6), at the expense of slower firing rate.

'Holo' Knife/Sword and Shield (Damage 0-2) - Also hard-light constructs. A holographic image of a melee weapon (usually knife or sword) forms around Adam's hand, as though gripped by him. The constructs are highly durable, and (the knife or sword at least) extremely sharp, but will run out of power after several minutes of constant use.

Raygun (Damage 4-5) - This is Strange's signature weapon. He carries it in a sheath either under his arm, or on his power-suit, and it is usually the first weapon for which he reaches, when required. It has a few different settings (stun, kill, etc) and generally serves as a typical laser-gun.

Equipment: Zeta-Beam (10)

This technology is famous, and allows Strange to teleport using his own portable Zeta-Beamer, to anywhere there is a Zeta-Platform (a teleportation device). Its range is interstellar, and there are a more than a few worlds now with these platforms (Earth included).

It IS possible to teleport to locations where there is no Zeta-Platform, but the process is extremely hazardous. Zeta-Beaming, while highly effective, is also rather unstable - therefore, 'catch-platforms' are highly recommended.

One teleport requires several hours to recharge (i.e. one should make sure of one's destination).

Zeta-Beaming only works for interstellar jumps (either between worlds, or between star-systems). It is not viable for short-range teleportation. Distance is at least (10).

Power: Super Sight (6)

Before he had to have new eyes grown for him, Adam Strange was already a perceptive man. Now that he has 'new eyes' - Rannian eyes, to be precise - he can see what Rannians see: across the electromagnetic spectrum. He has to focus in order to shift between wavelengths along the spectrum (filtering out the input he does not want), and be mindful of avoiding 'sensory overload'. The various wavelengths available to him are: Visible Light Infrared Ultra-Violet Gamma X-Ray Radio

Skill: Combat (4/5)

Adam Strange is a WWII hero. He has extensive experience in the battlefield, and has supplemented this with combat-training on Rann. Now, he is an expert in techniques both Terran and Rannian, capable of holding his own with a variety of melee weapons, or unarmed. His overall style is 'whatever works', using bits and pieces of what he has learned over the last century, here and there.

Ranged Combat - whether it is with his rayguns, gauntlet lasers or another ranged weapon in his hands, Strange is a very good shot.

Skill: Engineering (4/5)

Since teaming up with Rannian scientist, Sardath, Strange has become an accomplished engineer over the decades. Many of the gadgets, weapons etc he utilizes are of his own design, or have been adapted from Rannian and other alien cultures. He has no 'official' degree, but would qualify as a 'skilled amateur... who has had a LOT of time to practice' - especially when it comes to Zeta-Technology.

Skill: Infiltration (5)

Breaking into tombs, crypts, temples, museums etc is something Strange does on a regular basis. He can... usually avoid being seen, and he has a knack for avoiding booby traps (most of the time).

Skill: Pilot (6)

Put Strange either in a Rannian spacecraft, or in his personal jetpack and he will prove to be a highly proficient pilot. Most of his flight experience is with early 20th Century fighter planes, and a variety of advanced alien ships. He can navigate the spacelanes just fine, and hold his own in any dogfight.

Skill: Tactician (5)

This is a natural talent Strange has displayed, and is something he has had the opportunity to develop as he has served Rann as the world's protector. He is a canny tactician - particularly adept at finding unconventional means to resolve conflicts.

Skill: Xeno-Archaeology (8)

Strange's reputation in the field of interstellar archaeology is probably greater than his being an adventurer, and protector of the planet, Rann. He is the 'Indiana Jones' of the stars. He knows a fair number of Terran and alien languages (specializing in ancient dialects, primarily), and could be considered 'the man to ask' regarding ancient ruins, or alien customs, myths, legends and/or artifacts and treasures.

Advantages

Advantage: Fame

It is a big galaxy, and Adam Strange is just one man in it. Nevertheless, he has earned some degree of notoriety as the "Space Ranger", the "Protector of Rann", or the "Warrior of Two Worlds", etc... Rann, itself, is gone now (supposedly destroyed by a supernova), and 'the joke' - of being 'protector' of a world that no longer exists - has not been lost on some people. Also, on Earth, there might be some who would have heard of Adam Strange's work with the S.S.R., the 105th, etc during WWII, and others who have simply heard his reputation.

Advantage: Rann-Tech

Strange possesses a wide array of Rannian technological devices - carried either on his person, or stored in his home on Earth. He also employs instruments like trackers, decoders, scanners, medkit... much of the tech can be holographically displayed by his gauntlets/suit. With the apparent destruction of the planet Rann, Adam Strange may be regarded the number one expert on Rannian/Zeta Technology.

Advantage: Shield

Doctor Adam Strange is more of a consultant than an active member of SHIELD, particularly when it comes to the use of Zeta-technology on Earth. He has some contacts within the organization, and could probably call on them if it proved necessary.

Flaws

Flaw: Arachnophobia

Adam Strange cannot stand spiders. Big, small, Terrestrial or otherwise... spiders are evil.

Flaw: Curious

If Strange were to come across a button in an ancient, alien ruin - the 'scientist' in him would say 'find out what it does, first'. The 'adventurer' in him would say, 'press it and you'll find out what it does'...

So he usually ends up pressing it. Strange CANNOT resist a mystery, a riddle, a puzzle, an untouched/unexplored room, region, or a locked door. 'The universe needs to be touched', he would say. 'It wants to be touched'. One can imagine what curiosity can do to the proverbial cat...

Flaw: Enemies

Strange's enemies can be found all over the galaxy, and all of them are quite dangerous.

Flaw: Lost World

At this point in time, Strange believes Rann to be lost. There are rumors that the planet is not destroyed, but merely... "elsewhere", but he has been unable to verify anything he has heard. Strange considers Rann more his "home", than Earth - and he grieves for the loss of his home, as well as his wife, his daughter, father-in-law, friends, etc...

Truth be told, he fell in love with a dying people, on a dying world, under a dying star. He knows it, and he wouldn't change it for anything. In the meantime, there is still a galaxy out there, and he intends to see it - it's what his family would've wanted.

Flaw: Missing Years

Rann's atmosphere is actually toxic to humans, therefore, Strange originally had to return to Earth every so often (sometimes for months) to "de-tox". Instead, he went through various medical procedures to adapt his physiology - and spent some time in stasis (each year) so that his wife and daughter could still be near him.

On the positive side, he will live longer than most humans.

On the negative - he has missed chunks of time with his family (by being either on Earth, or in stasis), and he has missed almost everything in Earth history from about 1944 onwards.

He has some rather old-fashioned ideas (in some respects - in others, well he has seen just how vast and ridiculous the galaxy is).

Flaw: Obsessive

Strange has a tendency to focus too much on his work - his latest invention, latest discovery, a puzzle he has not (yet) solved... and so on. He has had books thrown at him, in the past, to get his attention and draw him away from his work.

Flaw: Zeta Radiation

Using Zeta-technology leaves (harmless) traces of radiation upon oneself. There are people (entire organizations) out there in the galaxy that can detect and trace Zeta-radiation - not a good thing for one trying to avoid one's enemies. The effects can last several hours (maybe a day) after 'beaming' from one location to another.

History[]

What is his story? - Strange started out as an archaeologist. He was born in Gotham in the early 1900s, an era of magic, murder and magnificent music, and soon proved to be a brilliant young man. His grades in school were so high that he found himself "fast-tracked" to university in his mid-teens, however, with the coming of the Second World War he - like so many others - volunteered to fight.

Initially he had assumed the war would put his archaeology and anthropology studies on hold - however, when Hitler began to show an interest in the legends and artifacts of various cultures (seeking an edge that would win him the war), the Allied Forces found a use for Adam Strange's knowledge. He joined a specialized unit (the 105th - calling themselves the 'Grave robbers') that worked closely with the S.S.R. (Strategic Scientific Reserve), dedicated to keeping those artifacts out of Nazi hands.

He was a veritable "Indiana Jones".

He even had the hat.

In the middle of 1943, Strange disappeared from Peru in a beam of brilliant white-yellow light, the survivors of the expedition assumed he had been killed, too (a Nazi weapon perhaps). But it was not a weapon. The phenomenon (which Strange would soon come to call a "Zeta-beam") was in fact a teleportation matter-stream that singled out Strange (he learned later he wasn't the only one) and transported him... to another world, twenty-five trillion miles from Earth. That world was called Rann.

A scientist named Sardath approached Strange and tried to explain that he had been behind the Zeta-technology. He showed his "visitor" the Zeta-platform, and then his research into the genetic degradation of his race. Despite the initial language barrier, Strange learned that he (among others) was intended to help the Rannians by introducing new genetic material (without harming him, of course).

Strange agreed.

It helped that Sardath also had a beautiful daughter - Alanna - and she and Strange began to form a relationship. Necessity forced him to make several visits back to earth, while the scientists on Rann endeavored to find a way to make his physiology more compatible with Rannian atmosphere. It was difficult, considering Rannian society had become stagnant over time, and plenty of other societies in the galaxy had preyed upon them. Genetically, they were a dying race. Scientifically, they had grown complacent and sloppy in its use. Emotionally, they had lost the will to fight. They had no army, no navy... and even if they did - who would lead them? They were desperate.

Ways were found to prolong Adam's lifespan (which involved gene therapy, as well as some time in stasis, intermittently), and help him adapt to Rann's environment. In return, he brought every ounce of his drive, his intellect and his warrior spirit to helping the Rannians overcome a number of threats (both from without Rannian culture, and from within). As the years went by, he was dubbed 'Saviour of Rann' and the 'Warrior From Two Worlds'. He married Alanna, had a daughter - Aleea - and worked with Sardath to perfect 'Zeta-Technology', allowing him to 'beam' himself across star systems in the blink of an eye.

An accident with the Zeta-Tech cost Strange his vision. He had to have new eyes /grown/ - cloned from a Rannian donor... his daughter. As a result, he found he could see all across the electromagnetic spectrum (just like any other Rannian). This came in handy with tracking stolen Zeta-Tech across the galaxy - even back to Earth, where he had dealings with the 'successor' organization to the S.S.R., namely, S.H.I.E.L.D. He became something of a consultant.

In more recent days, when Strange was away studying ancient alien cultures - Rann vanished. Nothing was left of the world, or even its solar system, but radioactive debris. Grief-stricken, Adam left in search of his adopted home... and found nothing. Eventually, he threw himself into "cross-galactic crime-fighting", and he did not care if it killed him. Fortunately, he was not the only "good guy" to be found in such dark corners of the galaxy, and he was encouraged to give Earth a chance - it was, after all, the only home he had left.
