Doug Ramsey's mutant ability is to understand and translate languages. In theory, it appears to be infinite, covering body langugage, spoken, written, tactile, and even computer/machine languages. In practice, this is limited by the physical capabilities of Doug's body and mind - whether he can keep up with it physically or mentally is another thing. He can, with training, use it as a combat tool, speaking the language of combat, but again, this is limited to what his physical, normal body can withstand.

Doug Ramsey's training with the New Mutants, SHIELD, and the X-Men help him defend himself as well as put himself in position to help others. In addition, the training has helped improve Doug's evasive skills, as they, -particularly- after his death, are much higher. Given his particular mutant ability, one needs to develop a -good- sense of where danger is coming from and avoid it as much as possible.

Doug first met certain X-Men in a dance class his parents enrolled him as a young man. Although he was able to pick up the nuances, he didn't truly enjoy it, but it's available to him if he wants to.

Doug Ramsey's research skills complements his language abiity, allowing him to place within context what he's learned; sometimes, just being able to -figure- out what something means helps every bit as much as just translating something.

Skill: Hacking (8)

Doug's ability with computer languages gives him an in towards hacking into computers. While not completely world-class, it's an ability that is constantly evolving as he develops more and more familiarity with various encrypting ability, and is limited to what he can handle within his physical and technological means. It does not cover hardware-encrypted data, for example.

Skill: Strategist (3)

Perhaps because of Doug's love for computer gaming, Doug has spent much time playing with strategic games, and has slowly developed organization skills in terms of allocating resources and maximizing resources available to him. He's not truly a combat strategist, but the makings of one are there.

Although Doug Ramsey left the agency when the X-Men came a-calling again, the young mutant had joined SHIELD for a reason, in finding himself. Its training allowed him to hone some of his skills, and teach him new ways of applying his mutant ability, and for that Doug is grateful.

Flaws

Flaw: Already Died Once

Sometimes, Doug just tosses himself into situations without much care for his well-being. Although it's usually portrayed as having faith in his teammates to cover for him, sometimes, if one's forced to admit it deep within himself, Doug's really sort of 'eh, death's not so bad' blaise attitude about it sometimes. Whether that's covering up some deeper insecurity or issue...

Flaw: Legally Dead

Douglas Ramsey was declared dead in 2008 after being shot twice. Although his time with SHIELD could have fixed this, it was convenient for his missions to consider him dead. He's attempted to correct the government files to give him enough for a new life, but it is impossible to entirely cover this up, so there might be records here and there that would show he's legally dead.

Flaw: Pop Culture Nerd

Doug Ramsey's an avid pop culture consumer. Memes, gaming, comics, tv shows and movies, the latest music vibes? That's Doug, surfing on the edge of the Internet meme world. This, however, can cause a bit of mass confusion whenever he make references to things that's generally -not- mainstream, and lead to moments of social awkwardness.

Flaw: Self-Doubt

Although Doug's ability is quite useful in non-combat situations, there are times when, in a world full of fliers and blasters, of tanks and psis, Doug questions the usefulness of being an X-Man, thrown in combat situations.

History[]

Douglas Aaron Ramsey was the son of Philip and Sheila Ramsey. He first came to Professor Xavier's attention through his friendship with a few of his students. It was not until later that Professor Charles Xavier, suspecting Doug's latent mutant power, offered him a scholarship to the Xavier Institute, and a home in the New Mutants.

Despite being an X-Man, Doug remained behind on many field missions, as his linguistic power did not lend towards active field work. Despise the ability to read body language, Doug was never able to quite position himself for field work on a consistent basis without his teammates covering for him, and so his work with the X-Men tended to be relatively minor- coordinating the team's communication network, working with Cerebros, and specialized field missions where combat was kept to a minimum.

And then Doug Ramsey died, shot twice on a mission.

Returning to life through means that he was never able to articulate or describe, Doug Ramsey did not return to the X-Men immediately, instead choosing to spend time refining his ability and re-discover living, as an agent of SHIELD. It took time before he once again returned to the X-Men...
