Beast Boy

Quote-open Beast Boy: "I wanna watch me some Manimal! A guy that can turn into animals?! That's so cheeseball!" Quote-close

Beast Boy's tragic story begins with a green monkey bite, the death of his parents, and being found by Gorilla City. A child of two worlds... Gar doesn't entirely fit into either of them. As such he's behind most children in education, social skills, and maturity. Gar has recently found his way to New York... and culture shock doesn't even begin to cover it.

(OOC: Gar's a chimera of Flashpoint, Classic DC, and New 52 Comics. With flavor from the Young Justice, Teen Titans, and Teen Titans Go cartoons.)

Abilities

Power: Animal Metamorph (9)

Limitation: If the form Gar takes is very large, like say, a T-Rex or a giant squid or a space whale? The longer he stays that way, the more taxing it is and the harder it is to shift to anything but human afterwards.

Limitation: Gar cannot turn into an animal he's never even seen a picture of before.

Limitation: Gar cannot, for reasons unknown, turn into a green version of someone else.

Yeah so there's a reason 'Beast Boy' stuck as a codename (even if Gar is trying really hard to get away from it): he can turn into any animal, terran, extraterrestrial, extinct, mythical -- so long as he knows what it is. It takes him no effort and only a split second to shift from one form to another. While in other forms, he retains his intelligence, speech, and reasoning. Uh, also his green-ness.

Power: Healing Factor (5)

Whatever it is that lets Gar shift his mass around and shapechange into various animals also allows him to heal injuries remarkably fast, but only when in his human form. In order for the healing factor to kick in, he has to shift back. This is helpful if he's knocked unconscious, since he automatically shifts back, but not so great if he's a bird and gets sucked into a jet engine while half a mile up.

Skill: Acting (5)

Gar is, in fact, a good actor; he keeps his fanbase and the media fooled as to what he's really like most of the time (see: Stephen Colbert), and sometimes even his friends. He's been looking into voice acting and really good makeup artists lately, because it doesn't matter how good you are if you're that green alien kid from that sci fi show who's actually green in real life. But: he's good enough that he can cry or laugh on command and make it look real, and he can memorize and deliver lines like nobody's business.

Skill: Education (4)

Despite the many disruptions of his childhood and adolescence, Steve Dayton made sure that Gar actually did his homework. The kid got good enough grades that (along with the frankly obscene amount of wealth that can get you into pretty much most institutes for higher learning) he was able to get into Cornell, and finished a BS in Zoology (with a minor in underwater basketweaving I mean media science).

Skill: Combat (6)

Limitation: In human form, Gar's fighting ability's about a 3.

This represents Gar's combat ability using his powers; he's been in his share of superhero battles and firefights, and knows, generally, exactly when to turn from a gnat into a Kodiak bear and when to turn from a hawk into a baleen whale and then into a dire wolf, while keeping track of the people on his side, and while swapping out the senses of all those critters each time he changes.

Advantages

Advantage: Dayton Estate

Located in East Hampton, New York, the Dayton Estate is possessed of hundreds of acres of land, an olympic-sized swimming pool, and a mansion with so many rooms he's completely lost track. He could look it up, but after having actually tried to count them and given up at a hundred, he never bothered. He once joked he'd nearly starved to death on the three-day journey between his bedroom and the kitchen. The estate's managed by Dayton's friend, butler, and long-term confidant Questor.

Advantage: Fame

Having had a brief stint in Hollywood as a teenager, playing the alien metamorph 'Tork' on 'Space Trek 2099', Gar enjoys the dubious honor of having a lot of really nerdy and/or really hipster fans. In the past few years, due to his inability to get any other role in anything (mostly because a green guy gets typecast pretty fast and Space Trek 2099 is tied up in all kinds of legal broohaha because of knocking off both Star Trek and Earth: 1999) he's capitalized on his status on a not-messed-up ex-teen-heartthrob and started a blog and made friends with gamers, gaining Internet Fame and trying to follow in Wil Wheaton's footsteps.

Advantage: Wealth

Having come into a big chunk of his inheritance -- his parents' money -- and coming into the rest of it at 25 - his adoptive parents' -- Gar is currently a well-off adventurer and will end up a wealthy adventurer in another few years. His parents weren't poor, and his adoptive father, Steve Dayton, was in the top ten richest peoplein the world. The guy will never lack in pocket cash and already has a Beemer. Jerk.

Flaws

Flaw: Green

He sticks out in a crowd.

Flaw: Stalkers

Having been in a cult favorite terrible science fiction show as a young teenager, Gar has his fair share of crazy fans, some of whom have superpowers, and some of whom are actually really scary and want to love him and pet him and name him george and oh god.

Flaw: Stealth Emo

Garfield uses jokes and clowning around not just to hide his emo heart, but to fake himself out. He's lost all his families, one after another, and blames himself even though he knows he shouldn't. As long as he keeps himself steamrolling through 'hey I'm the funny one' no one will be able to tell he is crying into his beer and all over his keyboards, deep in his green heart.

Flaw: Temper

Actually a serious flaw, Gar really, really has a wicked temper, and he doesn't have a very good handle on it. It takes a lot (or very specific triggers) to set him off, but if someone is threatening someone he loves or if someone's just betrayed him or something, he won't actually hesitate to turn into something very large and very strong and pointy on a lot of ends and maul them, or even kill (or try to kill) them, if there's no one there to stop him.

Flaw: Terrible Jokes

No really, they're worse than dad jokes. And sometimes they're kind of pervy, even if he doesn't actually mean them. So there's generally about a thirty percent chance of someone laughing, a thirty percent chance of lots of groaning, and a forty percent chance -- now that he's no longer sixteen and yet still makes these jokes -- of getting punched in the face.

History

Born to researchers who liked living in the middle of nowhere with bad healthcare and green monkeys, Gar contracted a rare disease called Sakutia when he was three. He was dying, and the only way his folks could save his life was by constructing a cure from... green monkey blood. This had the unintentional side effect of making Gar himself green, and able to turn into any animal he could think of. This was fun for a while!

A while until his parents died in a boating accident. Seriously. It was a totally mundane accident no one saw coming. The kid was taken in by King Tawaba, a friend of his parents' and chief of the local tribe. Problem is, the dude's witch doctor had hated Gar's parents with the passion of 1,002 suns, so he hired a couple of American looters to kill Gar, offering them the location of an abandoned temple in exchange. The temple collapsed on the witch doctor and the looters stole Gar instead, bringing him back with them to the states to commit crimes for them. Those guys killed each other and the courts appointed his parents' attorney as his legal guardian.

Problem with appointing attorney as legal guardian: while everyone thought the Logans were all dead, this lawyer dude was embezzling all their money! So THIS GUY wanted Gar dead, and set out to kill him. But Gar? By this time? Was like HEY SUPERHEROES I wanna be one! He got rejected by two groups in a row: Really Weird Heroes and Teenaged Sidekick Unofficial Club. It was because he needed the permission of his guardian, and his guardian was the evil lawyer, who was also dumb, because he couldn't figure out the green kid in the purple mask was the green kid he was legally responsible for. But whatever: in desperation, Gar ran away to join the circus, figuring this generally worked out for people with a drive to fight crime.

Problem!! It was an evil circus. So after he got hypnotized into being evil, the group of Teen Sidekicks fought him and sorted out the mess, then got him back in touch with the Really Weird Heroes, in whom he confided his legal guardianship woes. Finally, they picked the kid up and adopted him. He got to be a superhero with them! That was fun! And his adoptive mom had been a movie star, and man, he wanted to be a star too, so she helped him get some contacts and he wound up on a science fiction show as the somewhat annoying green sidekick to the crew that some fans loved and and some loathed.

Then his adoptive family all died except for his 'dad'. His show got cancelled, but his it was okay, his then-dad was like 'here, focus on school and superheroing'. And then he was like 'no you're doing it wrong. DO IT RIGHT.' And weirdly distant turned into borderline abusive.

That turned out kind of okay for a while anyway, because Gar fell back in with a the Teen Sidekicks; it turned out that real friends were actually a thing and he could have them and have fun with them! Who knew?! Heck, he even got a girlfriend! Even if the evil lawyer/ex-legal-guardian who had killed his Really Weird Heroes adoptive family ended up stealing her as bait to get Gar to come fight him, and naturally this girl was like 'you know what let's take a break'.

Finally, while kickin' it with the group of Teen Sidekicks, he fell in love with another young superhero, but she turned out to have been a double agent the whole time, leading him on to get access to his friends so her boss could kill them all. Not cool. She died in the ensuing conflict. Roundabout then he hit eighteen, and then it turned out his borderline abusive dad's helmet that gave him powers had warped his mind, and he went evil and tried to kill Gar and his friends. Then HE died in the ensuing conflict!

Inheriting a crapton of wealth from two sources, a good chunk of which was placed in trust until he was 21, with the bulk of it in trust until he's 25, Gar decided to take a break from heroing and go to college. While there, he started working on becoming Internet Famous and started a blog and whatever, gamely signing autographs and making appearances at science fiction conventions.

Finally, Gar finished college and was like, okay, I'm rich, 22, and have The Nerdist on speed dial, I AM GONNA DO THIS HERO THING AGAIN. Maybe he will even get a girlfriend who's not evil or bait! Miracles do happen, every day.
