Information
Name: Janet van Dorn Janet van Dorn is the replacement for Gotham City District Attorney Harvey Dent after his little... accident. Close followers of Gotham politics would know she was an ADA previously and in fact worked on Dent's reelection campaign. She known today for being stern, humorless, incorruptible, and disinclined to let any of that vigilante nonsense in Gotham continue.

Background

Christopher van Dorn, Janet's father, was one of the few honest cops in Gotham. Carol, his wife, was and is a nurse in one of Gotham General's emergency rooms. A working class family, they raised their only child strictly but with great love. She was a cheerful girl if quite headstrong, but she ran into trouble quickly with her classmates starting in kindergarten. Low-income as her family was, her classmates were often either the children of other cops -- few of whom were friendly with her father and therefore were less than inclined to be friendly with her -- or the children of criminals who had even less reason to think highly of an honest cop's daughter. Her early years were punctuated with conflict as a result, but the fights she couldn't avoid she acquitted herself well in and, after a point, was mostly left alone.

She was very much the all-American girl with a few unusual twists: she was a cheerleader in high school, but she also won the county's sharpshooting competitions until she was sixteen. She also joined the debate club and had remarkable success. Socially, she was still a little isolated from many of her fellow students but given that her father and then-Lieutenant Gordon were close colleagues, even friends, she became acquainted with (and progressively friends with) his adopted daughter Barbara. The girl was far younger, but Janet doted on Barbara and always tried to be there when classmates and boyfriends gave her trouble.

Armed with a deep respect for her father and a sharp mind, she proceeded to join him in the field of law and order. She went to law school, interning in the DA's office and completing her JD at the top of her class. She could have had her pick of law firms to join, but she aimed her sights for the prosecutor's offices instead. She was one of Dent's ADAs after he became District Attorney, even working on his election campaign. When he was removed from office, she succeeded him quickly as something of a reaction to the fear and distrust of vigilantes in Gotham City. So far she's performed more than adequately as a bringer of some form of order to the city, but unlike her predecessor she hasn't been nearly as open to the idea of working with the local vigilantes.

Abilities

Combat: Firearms (3)

Janet was a very fine sharpshooter as a girl and, while she's no longer as good as she once was, still keeps in practice.

Intellect: Law (5)
Top of her class, several years experience as a prosecutor, even if she is fresh as a District Attorney. She's darn good: as good as Harvey himself, some say. She's not one of them, though.

Perception: Lying (5)
She's a lawyer. And though she prides herself on bringing justice and all that kind of thing, she sometimes has to prevaricate a bit to do it. More specifically, she can run a line of pure BS if she has to. She can also tell when she's being fed a line, and she's not afraid of speaking up.

Combat: Ol' Sparky (2)
In celebration of making it to the lofty position of Gotham City DA, Janet's dad bought her a taser. Because of reasons. She tends to carry it wherever she goes.

Perception: Questioning (5)
Really, really good at getting information out of people who really, really don't want to give it to her. She's gotten a rise out of such notables as Poison Ivy, the Mad Hatter, and even the Joker, getting them to admit and even brag about their crimes on the stand.

Combat: Self-Defense (2)
Janet has taken police self-defenses courses and can get out of a tricky situation with thugs if they aren't too well trained. She keeps her cool in dangerous situations and is hard to rattle even when being attacked.

Advantages

Advantage: Connections

As the DA for one of the largest and most important cities on the eastern seaboard, Janet van Dorn has a whole lot of contacts and a whole lot of phone numbers. The mere fact that she has a phone number to get in touch with SHIELD, for instance, doesn't necessarily mean she'll get any help if she calls -- nevertheless, in Gotham City she's second only to the mayor in her impressive contacts list.

Advantage: Education
Janet is highly educated including a JD from Harvard Law.

Advantage: Lawyer
Top of her class and one of the finest prosecutors one could wish for. She specializes in getting suspects to lose their cool and dances quite effectively along the line when making deals with witnesses. Janet is a master manipulator and, if she were less inclined toward law, would probably make a very fine actor, saleswoman, or con artist. Her skills at research and observation are also exceptional.

Advantage: Reputation
As uncompromising as Commissioner Gordon. Can't be bought, can't be bribed. People know that and, whether or not they like her, they know she can be trusted.

Advantage: Unflappable
She's kept her cool in court across the aisle from the Joker. She rarely panics and is always the person to keep her head in a crisis -- the one to grab the hose when the grass catches fire, the one to snag a Batarang and throw it at the only light to give Batman the chance to start kicking tail.

Flaws

Flaw: Principled

Janet is devoted to the law and to the concept of accountability -- that is, she believes firmly that any officers of justice ought to be held accountable for their actions. Is she likely to accept the Batman, then, as in charge of Gotham City? Not likely. Not likely at all. She isn't likely to budge on the law at all except at great necessity.

Flaw: Reputation
Because she's known for being a hardass and unbribable, the nastier Gotham residents tend to show her no mercy. The corrupt cops -- and there's a lot of those -- might not even have any real compunctions about leaving her high and dry.

Flaw: Target
Gotham City DA. Harvey Dent's successor and former colleague. The person who's responsible for making those charges stick, for putting people into Blackgate and Arkham Asylum. Many law-abiding men and women may be fond of her, but she's made enemies of the underbelly of society.
