Cain had a troubled early youth. His mother died when he was around 5, leaving him to be raised by an abusive father, Doctor Kurt Marko. When his father eventually remarried, it was to a wealthy widow of an deceased colleague- Sharon Xavier. Sharon had a son of her own, Charles Xavier, who was better at Cain at everything. Jealously took hold, only made worse by a father that continued to beat him for his failings while praising Charles. Cain grew into an angry young man who blamed everyone else for the lot he was dealt. As a teenager he hung around with the rougher kids at school and regularly got into fights and caused trouble. This of course only made things worse at home, and eventually things came to a head with his father. After a particularly heated argument in Kurt's lab led to him throwing his son against the wall, Cain decided he'd had enough and bullrushed his father into a table of chemicals. Fire erupted and quickly engulfed the lab. Charles heard the noise and rushed to the lab to help, but was caught beneath burning debris. Forced to make a choice, Kurt freed Charles from the debris and carried him to safety, only to perish of smoke inhalation himself. Cain managed to get out on his own, but was unable to face what he'd done. He fled town and lived as a runaway for a couple years, eventually finding himself enlisting in the Marines (and lying about his age) in order to get out of the country and far away from his past.
The Marines were never a perfect fit for Cain, who found taking orders reminded him too much of childhood. But despite his insubordination and discipline problems, Cain was a naturally gifted and brutal fighter. When the Korean War started up, he found himself working as a scout as it was a good way to keep him out of his superior's way. Cain did his job but began to resent being stuck alone for long period's of time, and began to consider While on a mission deep in the dark of the jungle, Cain stumbled upon the lost ruins of a temple to Cyttorak. Always one to be looking for an easy break, he entered the temple with thoughts of hidden treasure. The treasure he found was more than he could have hoped for- something that would make so he could never be pushed around or looked over again. The Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. Upon touching the Gem it exploded in mystical energy, transforming Cain's body and armoring him as the Juggernaut.
Fueled by rage and empowered with the might of a God, the newly born Juggernaut raged through the jungle, laying waste to American and Korean alike before he was able to learn control over his new abilities and focus his thirst for destruction. Never a particularly ambitious man or forward thinker, Cain ended up using his powers for simple monetary gain and worked for several years as a mercenary. But throughout his travels, a part of him always dwelled on past and his half-brother. Cain blamed Charles for everything that had happened to him, convincing himself that his life and relationship with his father had been good before Charles had ruined everything. The anger built and built until it took him back home, to the Xavier mansion and ghosts of his past.
What Cain found was a newly opened School for mutants, with Charles as the founder and Headmaster, and apparently, a powerful mutant. If there had been any chance of a peaceful resolution before it was lost upon this revelation. While he had felt wronged before, knowing of Charles' power- that he must have been cheating with every test, every single time he beat Cain in sports- resentment turned to pure hatred. He fell upon the school with a rage and was only stopped by the combined teamwork of it's most exceptional students. It would not be the last time Cain and Charles (and his students) would come to blows.
Deciding once again to cut away from his past, Cain began taking shadier jobs, and mercenary work become criminal. While recognizing his downward spiral, Cain had become consumed by Cyttorak's power and his control of his rage began to slip until he became a danger to all around him. For the first time in his life Cain began to question what he had always considered a gift. But gift or curse, it was not something he could give up. But it cost him...Cain could not stay in one place long without attracting too much attention. Allies would inevitably turn to enemies when his rage would turn against them. The Juggernaut is an elemental force, and such things do not mix well with civilization.
As the years past, Cain found that Cyttorak's power kept him young while the world began to change around him. He has grown more and more tired of the way he was living his life- of always having people scared of him and always being forced to wander alone. And yet, it has been hard for Cain to imagine another life for himself. What else was there that someone like him could do?
He has been trying to live a quiet life in New York City and answer that question for himself. Cain has put his immense size and strength to work in construction. With his criminal record, and lack of skills that don't involve violence and criminal enterprise, he's been finding it difficult to make an honest life. He lives in a crappy apartment, works his crappy job, and nurses beers in a crappy dive bar. And all the while fighting thoughts of just tearing off the walls of the nearest bank and taking what he needs. Or even summoning the armor and trying to play at hero- he just doesn't trust what he might do under it's influence. Right now he's a tired and broken man trying to be left alone as he figures things out.
