Information
|
Name:
|
Walter Kovacs
|
The name is a lie. Walter Kovacs is no more. Walter Kovacs died ten years ago with six-year-old Blaire Roche, when the meat cleaver came whispering down through flesh and bone and brain. He died when her killer went up in flames - purified, punished - leaving behind only Rorschach. Now the man in the mask fights day in and day out, because while everyone else dances blindly, oblivious, he alone knows the truth.

Background
Walter Kovacs did not know his father but believed him to be a great man assisting in the war effort; his mother, meanwhile, was a prostitute and would take clients at home. Walter's interruptions often cost his mother her clients and their money, so she abused him, both physically and verbally, acts that fuel his misogyny, aversion to sexual activity, and prejudism against prostitutes to this day.
When Walter was ten, he got into a fight with two older, bigger boys, partially blinding one and tearing the cheek out of the other. Though they had been goading him by calling his mother a whore, the attack was reported as unprovoked, and Walter was sent to the Lillian Charlton Home for Problem Children.
At the Charlton Home, Walter excelled in his studies, particularly in religious education in literature. He also became quite skilled in gymnastics and amateur boxing. When he was eleven, he wrote an essay idolizing his father, praising President Truman, and supporting the decision to drop the atomic bombs. At sixteen, he received news that his mother had died, and soon afterward, he left the Charlton Home.
Walter worked for several years in the garment industry making women's clothing, which he found unpleasant, but bearable. At one point, a young girl requested a special order for a dress made out of heat- and pressure-sensitive fabric, but in the end, she found the garment rather ugly. Walter took it home to reshape into something that did not look like women's clothing.
Two years later, he read of a rape and murder in the newspaper and believed that the victim was the girl who had ordered the dress. Disgusted and horrified, Walter went home, took the special fabric the girl had disliked, and put on Rorschach's mask for the first time.
At first, Rorschach continued to work in the garment factory by day and then fought crime by night, eventually partnering with the second Nite Owl. They later joined the Crimebusters, which also included the Comedian, the second Silk Spectre, Doctor Manhattan, and Ozymandias.
Later, however, he investigated the kidnapping of six-year-old Blaire Roche and found her remains in an unused dressmaker's shop, her clothing in the furnace and her bones fought over by dogs. Rorschach killed the dogs, then burned alive the man who'd murdered her. That night, Walter Kovacs ceased to exist, and Rorschach was truly born.

Abilities
Skill: Deductive Reasoning (6)
Rorschach is adaptable to the various methods of reasoning, using them as necessary to obtain information from his surroundings. As such, he is able to locate people and objects that otherwise elude discovery. If he weren't so mentally unstable, he would have made a brilliant detective.
Gear: Grappling Gun (1)
Rorschach's gas-powered grappling gun is a gift from the second Nite Owl. He uses it to scale buildings with ease, but he's been known to shoot people with it, too - with deadly effect.
Skill: Gymanstics (3)
Rorschach trained in gymnastics during his years at the Charlton Home, becoming exceptionally skilled. In his vigilantism, he utilizes this skill regularly, which allows him to do the following with ease: leap from rooftop to rooftop, jump to reach higher objects, dive and land without injuring himself, scale surfaces with sufficient hand- and footholds.
Skill: Hand-to-Hand Combat (7)
Twenty-seven years of vigilantism have honed Rorschach's skills and conditioned his body, transforming him into a brutal fighter. He utilizes a combination of brawling street combat and the more precise boxing he learned in his youth. Utterly ruthless, he is not above breaking bones or even killing his opponents in order to win.
Skill: Infiltration (4)
Rorschach is a master infiltrator, able to sneak into high-security locations such as crime scenes and military bases without being detected. In particular, he is an expert at lock picking.
Skill: Tactical Thinking (4)
Described as "tactically brilliant" by the second Nite Owl, Rorschach is able to rapidly assess his current situation and choose his course of action. As a results, he is talented at improvisation, foregoing a reliance on gadgetry by using ordinary objects - even household items - in his investigations and in combat.

Advantages
Advantage: Contacts & Allies
As a member of the Watchmen, Rorschach has ties to other superheroes, both former and active. The second Nite Owl is an old friend and his former partner, and he is in contact with Dr. Manhattan, the Comedian, the second Silk Spectre, and Ozymandias.
Advantage: Education
During his time in school, Rorschach excelled in his studies of literature and religious education.
Advantage: Eidetic Memory
Though his memory is not perfectly eidetic, Rorschach is able to memorize an accurate description of an individual with a bit more than a cursory glance.

Flaws
Flaw: Methodology
Rorschach generally has no need for technology or gadgets. Though he could look up information on computers, he gets almost all of his knowledge from newspapers, from observation, or by word of mouth. While he's effective using this method, he is still hindered, especially in an age where the dependence on technology is increasingly apparent.
Flaw: Poverty
Vigilantism is Rorschach's only occupation. During the day, he poses as a bum and lives like one too. He frequently roots through the trash for any information that may help him in bringing down criminals, taking any food and items he might need for daily life as well. He will steal what he needs from the thugs he takes down as well as from his friends, provided that he believes it's wouldn't even inconvenience them, e.g. some sugar cubes or stamps.
Flaw: Psyche
Rorschach is an incredibly unstable individual, harboring misogyny, a morally objective worldview, nationalistic tendencies, and hints of insanity. On top of that, his actions are generally hypocritical, indicating either that he believes he dwells outside of his own objectivism, his "law" is not the law issued by the government, or that he chooses to ignore his own hypocrisy. More than likely, he is a combination of all three.
