|
"Bucky" Barnes was nearly killed as he tumbled off a fateful train in 1943. His body drifted in the cold and he was recovered sometime later. Brainwashed, reprogrammed, and revived as THE WINTER SOLDIER, he became a weapon for the Russians during and after the Cold War. Recently returned to New York, he has been examined by SHIELD doctors and psychologists in the hopes of figuring out who he was before the amnesia.

Background
| Orphaned just before the beginning of World War II, James 'Bucky' Barnes survived, making his way in the world as a strong-minded, outgoing, and friendly young man. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 with America's involvement in the War, but was disappointed that his friend, Steve Rogers, couldn't join him. Once in England, Barnes was thought captured or killed on the front against HYDRA. Steve Rogers, having become Captain America by this time, discovered his name on an MIA list and immediately took to action to retrieve him. After freeing the prisoners of war, Steve and Bucky escaped HYRDA pursuit and helped the army dispose of secret HYDRA sites throughout Europe. Tracking Dr. Zola and his men, Bucky and the rest of the newly created 'team' intercepted him on a train traveling across Europe. An intense chase on the train commenced and, deep in the mountains, Bucky fell and disappeared, later declared dead.
Years later, he was retrieved by the Russians and the Winter Soldier project began. Brainwashed, robbed of his identity through amnesia, and trained to be the ultimate, cold-blooded, calculating assassin, James Barnes became Winter Soldier. An investigation begun by SHIELD in 1971 was based on rumors of assassinations and war crimes committed by the Russians' top secret agent who remained a mystery. It was only after confronting the Red Skull himself did Winter Soldier begin to question his purpose. He went rogue, becoming a dangerous fugitive from his Russian controllers yet still attempting to elude the other agencies who wanted to extradite him for crimes against their nations.

Abilities
Gear: Bionic Arm (3/5/4)
When James Barnes lost his arm, it was replaced with a cybernetic implant. This new arm has many abilities, but reacts and moves like a real arm integrated into his system; it is an electromechanical prosthetic with advanced technology. The arm itself has sensors which can fool security measures such as metal detectors into thinking it is a and blood arm.
The bionic arm has superhuman abilities which gives him great strength, dexterity, and blasting power from that arm only. He can lift up to 1,200 pounds and can move faster than even the most dextrous of humans. He can fire bolts of electrical energy from the palm, equal to about 30K volts of electricity and can dischange EMP to shut down electronic devices.
The advanced technology of the arm allows James to be mentally linked to the arm so that he can operate it even if it is disconnected from his body. (Strength/Agility/Electricity)

Conditioned by the Russians as a weapon for first the Cold War and later under the auspices of their secret network of spies and assassins, he was trained to be a highly effective physical combatant against single or multiple foes in both armed and unarmed melee.

The Winter Soldier became a Person of Interest to the USA due to his reputation as an extremely effective sniper and assassin. His balance and stay are extraordinary as well as his visual acuity. He has a familiarity with nearly all earthly firearms and has an uncanny ability to quickly learn their use. His ability as a sniper is nearly unrivaled.

With the training he received, Winter Soldier is the equivalent of an Olympic-class athlete in terms of athletic ability and acrobatics.

In addition to his earlier training in Military Science as 'Bucky', part of Winter Soldier's elite training with the Russians included stealth, tracking, and evasion. He became so skilled that he was able to evade governments and privateers for decades. He was made to be the consummate assassin; silent, swift, and undetectable, and he succeeded.

Winter Soldier has been trained to use an assortment of military grade weapons, explosives, and firearms. His most common firearms are a .50 caliber sniper rifle, an assortment of handguns, and tools for covert operations. He has access to weapons caches stored throughout locations which were begun during the Cold War and used to the present day which includes plastique, grenades, rifles, and sub-machine guns for heavy assault. While firearms are his preferred weapons, he has been trained to be able to pick up nearly any weapon and utilize it for his purposes.

Advantage: Conditioning
Winter Soldier has been conditioned to thrive under stressful situations. He is able to improvise as needed while still maintaining a fixed view on his needed goal. He has a vast knowledge of wilderness survival so disappearing into the wilds is often a well-used tactic if he needs to lose any that might be chasing him. He gets fixated on his missions and will do what he must in order to see it to its completion.

Advantage: Languages
Another part of his brainwashing included adding a fluency in Russian, Japanese, and German. His ability with Russian has become as fluent as the English he was raised with. He has lesser fluency with the romance languages of French, Spanish, and Italian.

Winter Soldier's conditioning by the Russians included physical and chemical programming which not only enhanced his senses, making them sharper and on a hair-trigger, but it also changed the chemistry in his brain and how he perceived 'right and wrong'. He was created to be a cold-blooded, calculated killer.

Flaw: Amnesiac
Currently, Winter Soldier has no memory of his name, personality, or life before he was revived and re-trained.

Flaw: Brainwashing
The physical and chemical brainwashing that James was put through stifled all memories of his former life, making him a blank slate to be controlled. It also made him quite volatile and susceptible to breakdowns in addition to his cold, calculated execution of his objectives.

Flaw: Hunted
Winter Soldier is wanted by many nations throughout Europe, Asia, and North America including but not limited to the CIA, Mossad, SHIELD, and MI6. It is always a danger when he travels to stay off of authorities' radars, but his skills of evasion tend to allow him to slip in and out, like a ghost, in order to make his mark.

Flaw: Mentally Unstable
The brainwashing left James mentally unstable. It's almost as if his personalities are divided, but whenever he tries to balance them, the instability often causes some sort of breakdown. Due to the instability, James has instances of Depression which have been known to lead into an induced Aggression, possibly related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Flaw: Out of Time
While Winter Soldier has been briefed on the times and technologies of the last few decades, James Barnes is still a bit out of time thanks to the successful brain-washing and near separation of personalities.

Flaw: Reputation
Winter Soldier is reknown throughout the world as a deadly political assassin. This has made him many enemies and has marked him as a threat.
